APTF Scholar Task Force Meeting

APTF Task Force Meeting

On February 25th, 2012, the American Public Transportation Foundation (APTF) Scholar Task Force met in Washington, DC, at APTA headquarters, alongside approximately 40 young professional and interested individuals, to discuss workforce development initiatives the task force has taken thus far and the plans for the future. The meeting was led by APTF Scholar Task Force Chair, Larry Duhon, Jr.

The group began by discussing the task force strategic plan and results from the young professionals survey. The conclusion of these two documents suggested that the task force focus on three main objectives:

  1. creating a transfer mentor program
  2. developing continuing education and networking opportunities through webinars and conference for scholarship recipients
  3. establishing a transit professionals program to place interns into transit agencies

The group then moved on to discussing ways that we may interact and work with other organizations and programs so as to not duplicate efforts but combine and foster new and growing ideas. Potential ideas included the development of materials that individuals and organizations could use to interest and engage primary school students in transit, recruitment of young people into the industry, internship programs for high school and college students, and ways that APTF could work with organizations like Young Professionals in Transportation, WTS, Transportation Learning Center, ENO Foundation, COMTO and others to provide repositories of information on groups, internships, education, training and schools that have dedicated transportation programs.

The APTF Scholar Task Force is comprised of past scholarship recipients currently working in the transit industry. Several task force members participated via conference call. The APTF chair of the board, Bonnie Shepherd, and board member Jill Chen Stober were in attendance.

During the meeting various scholarships recipients and young professionals were interviewed on their opinions benefits on the APTF scholar and the industry as a whole.
